I am a 22 year old male having bad reactions to calcium. This inability to tolerate calcium started about a year and a half ago. When I consume even small amounts of calcium I get pressure, a burning sensation and cramping in my lower right stomach area. My throat swells and burns and my eyes develop a gooey discharge. My breathing feels tight and when I inhale my heart hurts and skips beats. I get pain in my feet and especially my toes which turn red and feel irritated. When it gets really bad my left arm gets sore. I get similar symptoms from eating heavily or consuming alcohol. Even with breaks from food and liquid there seems to be a liquid In my stomach were I experience this pain. No doctor has offered me any relief or understanding. The only thing my doctor has given me is an antidepressant which I wouldn't need if I wasn't experiencing this pain. If anyone can offer me any help or suggestions please do so. I am very worried about the long term consequences to my health because this feels like it's killing me.

well you've certainly come to the right place to find people who also experience symptoms that feel like they are going to kill us.
i can't relate to your situation, but there is definitely a good chance someone here will, as we all experience a very wide range of problems.
have you seen a GI specialist? have you been tested for celiac disease? allergies? GERD? ulcers?
i am 24 and have dysautonomia, and one of my most recent symptoms has been this fullness and tightness in my upper abdomen that causes my chest to feel really tight and painful when i inhale, and my heart to skip beats (which it usually does anyway). it's horrible. i just went to the ER because i thought it was going to kill me. so you're not alone in that!

Charlie---
Any other symptoms that you've experienced day to day? Anything, even if it seems insignificant. Physical problems that are annoying yet perhaps slight.

Also, what you're describing sounds almost like an "allergic" reaction. Of course it wouldn't be an allergic reaction per sa, unless you are literally allergic to a coating on the calcium supplement, etc. It's like how I'm "allergic" to sulfur. I'm not really allergic to sulfur, but I do have problems with the transsulfuration pathway, thus I get allergic-esque reactions from sulfur.

You may have trouble metabolizing calcium.

I'm confused though--- Do you only experience all of those symptoms when you take calcium?

Why do you take calcium? Have you had your electrolyte levels measured? Is your blood level of calcium too high or too low? What form of calcium are you taking?

Are you taking any medications? Are you taking any steroids? This includes things like prednisone.

i thought "allergy" too, except that charlie is experiencing similar responses to heavy foods and alcohol, not necessarily just calcium. this sounds more like a digestive issue. foods high in calcium, like cheese, milk, etc, can be very hard for the GI system, which would definitely set off any GI issues. i'm interested to hear in any other symptoms though.
