like many of you, when i stand up from a sitting position, my heart rates and i feel dizzy and faint. i also get a surge of anxiety (does this happen to everyone else?)
however, interestingly, i have noticed that my blood pressure jumps pretty dramatically when i stand. it goes from about 100 to 125. then pretty quickly normalizes itself.
is this typical of pots? could this be because catecholamines are being secreted, hence the surge of anxiety upon standing?

I have that too...its called orthostatic intolerance/syncope. My resting BP is like 90-100/50-60...when I stand, it goes up to 125/80ish (which, by the way, is a "normal BP"). Once I am up for a bit, it normalizes and will change to 115/70. You may need to increase your beta blocker...I used to "see stars" EVERYTIME I stood up but since I've been on the beta blockers I rarely get the dizzies or the pre-syncope feeling on standing (even though my BP is increasing).

My dr told me that I am one of the lucky ones who'se BP INCREASES when then heart rate goes up....the people w/ POTS whose pulse goes up but their BP plummets on standing are the ones who pass out...he said it means I have a strong heart that can adjust to the change in position - he also reminded me that it takes several mins for my central nervous system to adjust to the change in position.

I think you said you cannot take SSRIs - I tried another one a few weeks ago and it made my BP and pulse go very low...I went off it and continue on the klonopin (very small dose) - that helps my anxiety tremendously.

thank you! i certainly like your doctor's take on our bp increasing, being because of strong hearts. although sometimes i wish mine wasn't so "strong" so that i wouldn't feel every little palpitation.
my boyfriend has pvcs and never knew it until my at-home blood pressure monitor picked up an irregular heart beat. he doesn't feel a single one! me, on the other hand, feel like i will die with every flip-flop. haha.
i always assumed my blood pressure was dropping when i stood because i see starts and feel really dizzy as well, but i do recover very quickly. dizziness is not one of my symptoms, hardly ever at all. are we seeing stars and feeling dizzy because of the increase in heart rate???
i definitely want to start on some klonopin. i am going to be trying clonidine today, and we will see how that works, but i think i need a benzo.

This happens to me too. Pulse and bp will be very low when sitting or lying down (unless an IST attack hits) and then when I get up bp/pulse will shoot up. Sometimes they will stay up, other times it will go to "normal" levels. Pulse usually stays up pretty higher than normal though.
I am one of those rare people who fall in the middle. There are times when I am up and active that I do experience the bp plummets and syncope episodes. Other times, my bp stays high. Go figure....it's just a daily thing. I never know what each day will bring.....
When my pulse and bp are high I do experience the anxiety surges. They are not very fun. I am dizzy pretty frequently.
I experience symptoms such as lightheadedness/dizziness, head pressure, etc. with almost every position change. It can be standing to sitting or sitting to standing. I have also been know to almost faint lying down and reaching to get the phone. These are the times I feel like I'm being pushed or pulled or like someone is pushing me down from the top of my head. It is believed that this is all orthostatic intolerance and my central nervous system has problems adjusting to the gravity changes.
Some days this is more active than others - I like the days when it's pretty mild Smiler

Mine can fall or it can increase. It depends on the time of day, what I've been doing (if I've been out in the heat), and what my heart rate is. My blood pressure, luckily, usually increases - but, my BP is so low when laying and sometimes sitting down that the increase can be pretty much useless. 67/43 to 79/55 for example - that's not enough to allow me to be upright so I'll fall over. If my HR has been up over 130 for a while my blood pressure may stay around 90s/50s or 60s - or maybe even 110/50s. If I stand still too long I have the typical NCS response - BP lowers and HR increases.

No feelings of anxiety, ever. Even before a fall all that I really feel/think is "oh darn". lol
