does anyone else have episodes of slurred speech not related to anything you can think of. My husband says it happens often, and the bad part is I don't even realize it. Very annoying especially if we are in a social setting and he tells me afterwards that I was slurring badly. How embarrassing! People assume I am drunk, I'm sure.

could be blood sugar- sometimes when i eat more it helps even if i just ate- someone else said a comment about high insulin levels so even if you just ate your sugar can go low

Actually, I get these confsued unable to speak symptoms when my blood sugar goes high--is like being drunk--and I get very groggy. If you're drinking it will FOR SURE be worse. Sugary food is also bad tho. High blood sugar IS actually much like being drunk.
Having low blood sugar tends to give me the jitters and racing pulse--tho i can also get confused there as well if it's so low my brain is being starved. Again, most drug stores now will give you a blood sugar testing machine for free with everything you need including 10 sample strips. Why not get one and see for yourself? |

i generally sound like i have a frog in my throat by 5 or 6pm and if i get really tired, i start to stutter (dys doc said it is from the fatigue and loosey-goosey blood vessels, trying to keep the brain & heart & lungs and stuff you need to work, working so I just shut my trap and let the blood flow where it may!)

I actually got on here today cuz I have had times since Sat. when I loose my ability to talk. It starts with slurring or soft slow speech and just gets to the point that I can only get a few words out. Then if it keeps getting worse, it goes to nonsense sounds even though I know exactly what I want to say. For me it usually happens during eating or after I eat. We have even mashed or pureed my food and it still doesn't completely prevent it. I have been diagnosed with swallow syncope but haven't had problems with it in months. Now it is back. Help!
It is usually set off by something--infection, hormone changes, excessive stimulation. I would think it would be gone or going away if it was the latter 2. It leaves me bed bound also; very weak. Ugh!! |

mashing food--esp potatoes and starches--would lead to a very fast sugar spike--and poss hypergycemia--high blood sugar-- which would cause this

Yes, I too have the slurred speech, unsteady gait, and memory loss. At least with this, I don't have a hangover in the morning.

Hi All,
I get slurred speech pretty frequently. I have chronic intractible migraines as well as dysautonomia so the speech has always been chalked up to the migraine. I think it could be part of both though. I will often get it after I faint. The worst experiences have occured when I have been speaking in front of people and lost speech completely. (Happened several times in college.) Still, I try to keep going, even though it is annoying. Pain free days, sailingm |

I was doing some reading this week. My doc had said that he thinks my speech problems may be from part of my brain not working or shutting down for a bit. My swallow syncope is from over stimulation of the vagal nerve. I read this week that the vagal nerve affects or controls speech. So I am wondering if when my vagal nerve goes wacko, if that is what affects my speech. My vagal nerve also is affected when my bowels move too. The medical professions says they've never seen anyone with such a sensitive vagus nerve as me. Lucky me. Ha Ha!

Mestonin does it to me. Every time I take it i get this tongue paralysis and it's very hard to understand my speech, it's embarrassing.

Could also be part of a "complicated migraine". A complicated migraine can give you all the symptoms of a stroke, including slurred speech, one-sided weakness and loss of vision.
They can go on for weeks at a time without much or any headache at all. |

saw my doc Fri. He confirmed that the excessive vagal nerve over stimulation by eating, pooping, or peeing can definitely affect my speech. He was not suprized at all. He put me on robinul (any one ever taken that before?) to help block some of that vagal nerve over response. It's an older drug. Supposed to take it 3 xs a day.
It knocked me out the first dose. So I waited till bed time to take 1/2 that. It affected me for 24 hrs. so I went to a 1/4 dose once a day at bed time. Then yesterday I had a problem after peeing. I just can't seem to get stable again. I hate starting new meds. But can't seem to live without them either. UGGGHH! Smiles Oh, that complicated migraine sounds interesting. I will look it up. |

yes, get the slurred speech.
when i 'relapse' into a bad period where i can barely move, i slur badly. on a typical day, i don't slur but i forget words..they are on the tip of my tongue and i can't think of the right word. i have to describe what i'm trying to say and then when someone says the word, i say 'yes!!!' i had full neuropsych testing and nothing showed up..... its all the pots. |

I read about the complicated migraines. That was interesting. It is similar to what we get but not quite the same.
I am doing well on the Robinul now. No major flares for 6 days. I've worked my way up to almost the regular dose. I am so glad I am doing some better. Smiles |
