does anyone know what actually causes IST? and why, for example, does my heart rate go from 90 to 200 so quickly, while others might experience a jump from 90 to 130? what determines this difference?

Hi Gracie,

I haven't looked into this for yrs. and I think the only info I got was from about.com - not a very reliable site, a lot of misinfo.

Anyway, they said some drs. think it is autonomic and others think it has to do with the sinus node (heart's natural pacemaker). I am guessing that drs. are thinking sinus node as some are now ablating the sinus node for it.

Here's a guess on the heart rate difference...Maybe it has to do with age? The reason I wonder is that for exercising to find your max heart rate you subtract your age (in the equation, I believe this is it 220 - age = max heart rate). Plus, mine would jump close to my maximum heart rate. It didn't all the time, but never higher.

hugs
