Just curious if anyone else here had "growing pains" as a kid/teenager? I remember having days where I'd have to crawl around because what the doctor called "growing pains" were so bad I could barely move. However, at that time, I was healty in every other way. Just wondering if this could be a little piece of the puzzle.

I always did, and still do...yet I am not growing. Sometimes this is the worst part of POTS for me...the joint pain. I wish I knew what caused it...it defintely is worse on my bad days and just gets worse and worse the more I push myself.

we had a long post of this a few months ago. Several members, including myself, had bad growing pains. I would cry it was so painful in my knees, and the only thing that could give relief was a hot compress.

The latest research states that growing pains are caused by some degree of hypermobility (whether benign hypermobility or regular hypermobility). Because the joints can bend farther than they should, they are unstable, particularly during running on the knee joints. The instability and yet constant activity (particularly with children) causes the pain. Some people will get early-onset arthritis too. Joints that "pop" or "crack" are also a part of deal. I have benign hypermobility. I can't do splits but joints all bend backward, including knees, elbows, fingers.

The hypermobility has been linked to connective tissue damage, which is why it was interesting when I was recently tested for homocysteine and it came back 45mcmol/L ("normal" is 5 to 15 mcmol/L). High Homocysteine amount will cause connective tissue damage.

Doctors recommend patients wear knee (and elbow) braces when working out at the gym. Also, try not to stand with your knees hyperextended. Always have them a little tiny bit bent.

I myself, always tell people to have a good work up of their methylation cycle (which includes having your homocysteine tested.) Better to fix the cause than the symptom is my feeling.

Hi all,
I am sorry but I don't have it in me to write another post that may explain some peoples "growing pains" and the reason you may have experienced them or still are. Instead I will tell you to check out my post on the osteoperosis / osteopeniea thread posted by Lulu. It is a long post but may give many of you an insight and if you are still suffering with bone or joint pain, you may want to ask your doctor to check you for osteomylacia.

Sorry but I have had a bad week myself and I just can't type that well,
Joline

All of my pain was in my knees and ankles as a young child. I've read that actual growing pains tend to be in the shins and thighs, so I wonder how parents or doctors could have missed that.

My ankles are hypermobile, I've worn a brace on the left one for nearly a year now because I couldn't stop popping it wrong every time I would stand up. Knees seem normal but the patellas can be pushed around enough that it looks very weird. Hips and shoulders can be partially dislocated if enough weight is on them - ie my weight when rolling over in bed.
